The aim of this course, a pre-requisite to obtaining a licence, is to train persons who intend to perform services on industrial equipment that produces x-ray radiation, in principles of radiation safety. Personnel who perform restricted services are required to hold a licence in compliance with State Legislation.Area of Industry Served:Industrial application of the cabinet x-ray equipment such as baggage scanning x-ray units at airports.Upon successful completion of this course, learners:Should be able to successfully pass the *Radiological Council’s qualifying examination conducted by SGS Radiation ServicesWill possess the skills and knowledge to safely operate and service x-ray equipment with confidence and minimise the radiation hazard to themselves, other workers and member of the public* Please note that the examination is set by and marked by the WA Radiological Council who will directly advise the participant of their mark. Licences are issued only by the WA Radiological Council.

The 1-day Radiation Safety Awareness and X-Ray Analysis Systems course has been structured as an independent set of modules with no prerequisites. Following an introduction to various aspects of radiation, the course progresses through principles and practices related to management and use of X-ray analysis devices. The course is suitable for persons having no previous experience and for those requiring refresher training.

This course aims to provide persons working with or around equipment that produces x-ray radiation an awareness of the principles of radiation protection.Upon completion of this course, operators are expected to know the basic radiation protection principles so that they can work comfortably and confidently with analytical x-ray equipment and to be able to understand why certain procedures must be followed to achieve radiation protection.Area of Industry Served:Any industrial application using XRF Unit.

The radioactive sources of natural origin (NORM) may present inside scrap metals. Most cases natural radioisotopes such as uranium, thorium or radium are inadvertently deposited as scales inside various items such as metal pipe-works, clamps, motor, heat exchangers and other equipment that may cause health hazards if not handled with care. Apart from radiation exposure to workers and the members of the public, contaminated scrap metals may cause environmental and facility contamination with substantial clean-up cost.Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) is the term used to describe materials that contain radioisotopes existing in the natural environment. These materials are found in rocks, soils, mineral sands and in ground water. Radioactivity is exhibited when traces of uranium, radium and thorium or other natural radioisotopes are present inside scrap metals.The basic radiation safety guidelines involving safe handling of NORM are set up by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the statutory authority such as ARPANSA. The guidelines specify safety and exempt limits for all radioisotopes below which material may be considered radiologically non-hazardous.This one-day Scrap Metal awareness course is intended to provide basic information on radiation protection and safety so that the operators can work competently and confidently and understand why certain procedures are required to be followed.

Many people are required to work with radioactive material, and it is important to understand the potential hazards of ionising radiation. The SGS Radiation Safety Awareness and Unsealed Radioactive Sources training course is suitable for personnel working in facilities that require management of unsealed sources to minimise employee exposure.

The course is designed for initial and refresher RSO training where fixed nuclear gauges are employed.  Trainees are taught the hazards associated with radioactive materials and become familiar with all the regulations. The course includes basic radiation safety, dose calculations, radiation protection program elements, regulatory inspections, licensing, emergency actions, radioactive material accountability, leak testing, maintenance, transportation, waste management, and the duties & responsibilities of an RSO.

The 7 hour Gauge Isolation/Awareness Course is intended to provide a sufficient level of knowledge to enable the operator to comfortably work around fixed radiation gauges and should understand why certain procedures are required to be carried out.

This course involves the skills and knowledge required to confine small emergencies in a facility and it applies to occupants who are required to have first attack firefighting skills. It includes preparing for emergency situations, identifying and assessing an emergency, safely confining emergencies, using initial response equipment and reporting on the facility's emergency response.Small emergencies in a facility include incidents such as small fires that can be controlled using a fire extinguisher; chemical spills that can be controlled using facility personal protective clothing and equipment and a spill kit; or a vehicle accident where there is no significant injury or damage.This course has been developed to cover the facilities as specified in Australian Standard AS3745 and AS4083. For this course, as covered by AS3745 and/or AS4083, occupants are people attending a facility on a permanent or temporary basis such as an employee, contractor, student or resident, but not a visitor or patient and a facility is a building, structure or workplace that is, or may be, occupied by people (occupants).All aspects of this course must be undertaken in line with legislative requirements, organisational policies and procedures, and accepted safe work practices.Assessment:A Theory Assessment with multiple choice and short answer questionsPractical Assessments, with tasks including:A prestart inspection on a fire extinguisherCorrect use of portable fire extinguishersCorrect use of a fire blanket

The aim of this course, a pre-requisite to obtaining a licence, is to train persons who intend to operate portable gauges (moisture and density), in principles of radiation safety. Operators are required to hold a licence in compliance with State Legislation.Area of Industry Served:Any application using portable gauges for purposes such as density and moisture content indication.

This one-day NORM awareness course is intended to provide basic information on radiation protection so that the operator can work confidently and to understand why certain procedures are required to be followed.
