NORMs Radiation Awareness

This course is recognised by the Victorian Department of Health as an approved training course for obtaining a radiation use license for fluoroscopy. The course includes a basic introduction to radiation and the related risks. This course will provide participants with an in depth description of how X-rays are produced, and the technologies and techniques associated with fluoroscopy that may be utilised to optimise image quality whilst reducing patient and staff dose.

The aim of this course, a pre-requisite to obtaining a licence, is to train persons who intend to perform services on industrial equipment that produces x-ray radiation, in principles of radiation safety. Personnel who perform restricted services are required to hold a licence in compliance with State Legislation.Area of Industry Served:Industrial application of the cabinet x-ray equipment such as baggage scanning x-ray units at airports.Upon successful completion of this course, learners:Should be able to successfully pass the *Radiological Council’s qualifying examination conducted by SGS Radiation ServicesWill possess the skills and knowledge to safely operate and service x-ray equipment with confidence and minimise the radiation hazard to themselves, other workers and member of the public* Please note that the examination is set by and marked by the WA Radiological Council who will directly advise the participant of their mark. Licences are issued only by the WA Radiological Council.

This three and a half day Fixed Gauges course otherwise known as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) course is designed to equip the candidate to effectively manage all aspects as required for the safe use fixed radiation sources.Upon successful completion of the course exam, learners will be able to:Apply for Western Australian License for Fixed Gauges from the WA Radiological Council which is a pre-requisite for the appointment of site Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)Supervise any unlicensed technical personnel, employee or contractor working in the vicinity of a Fixed Radiation GaugeSupervise any unlicensed technical personnel or workers involved in installation, removal of a Fixed Radiation GaugeComply with the Statutory Requirements with regards to use, storage and transportation Fixed Gauges in Western AustraliaCarry out Fixed Gauges inspection, maintenance, collection of wipe test samples and test radiation level around or in the vicinity of Fixed GaugesAble to work confidently and competently in the vicinity of a Fixed Radiation GaugeAble to calibrate or isolate Fixed GaugesPrepare Work Instructions/Radiation Management Plan and Emergency ProcedureMaintain site radiation store in compliance with the Regulatory Guidelines
