Course Overview

What you'll learn

Upon successful completion of the course requirements,  a Statement of Attainment will be issued for:

  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID011 – Provide first aid

Nationally recognised training delivered by SGS Australia Pty Ltd (RTO# 2646)

Recertification:

It is recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice that you update your CPR skills every 12 months and first aid qualifications should be renewed every 3 years.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Due to the specific nature and purpose of this course, Recognition of Prior Learning is not available. Offering RPL would introduce unnecessary administrative complexity which can extend your assessment process and time to be longer than the course duration. To maintain uniform standards and ensure competency in critical lifesaving skills, all Learners are required to complete the full training and assessment. Please contact us for further information.

Who This Course Is For

This refresher course is designed for current First Aiders who need to renew their first aid and CPR skills and knowledge. It supports learners in maintaining their competence and confidence to respond effectively to real‑life emergencies, whether at home, in the workplace, or within the wider community.

Pre-Requisites:

Current First Aid and CPR Statement of Attainment.

LLN Requirements:
Language, literacy and numeracy skills are required at a level to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documentation relevant to this course. This includes counting chest compressions and providing an accurate verbal report of an incident. Participants with a language, literacy or numeracy difficulty or other special needs should inform our training support staff prior to enrolling to discuss our support services available if required.

Physical Requirements:
Participants must have the physical and mental capacity to:

  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
  • Participate in simulated real-life situations required of the skills and knowledge of each unit of competency being undertaken.

Dress code:

Participants are required to wear clean clothing appropriate for the workplace and enclosed shoes.

About this course

This First Aid and CPR refresher course is for those that hold a current first aid certificate only. This course is designed to refresh participants with up-to-date skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support including how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a person who is unconscious and not breathing normally in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and management of casualty(s) and the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

  • Poisons and toxic substances
  • Bites and stings
  • Unconsciousness

Assessment:

This course includes the following competency-based assessments:

  • A Pre-Course Theory Assessment
  • A Theory Assessment with multiple choice questions
  • Practical Assessment, with tasks including:
    • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
    • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
    • Follow the prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
    • Complete an injury report
    • Respond to the following first aid scenarios:
      • non-life-threatening bleeding control and shock
      • Nose bleed
      • Anaphylaxis
      • Envenomation
      • Fractures and dislocations
      • Asthma
      • Choking and airway obstruction
