Who This Course Is For

This course applies to workers who may be required to complete non-electrical work safely in the vicinity of a live electrical apparatus.

Pre-Requisites:
There are no pre-requisite units for this course.

Course entry requirements:
Participants must be at least 18 years old.

LLN Requirements:
Language, literacy and numeracy skills are required at a level to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documentation relevant to this course, such as Permits and JSAs. Participants with a language, literacy or numeracy difficulty or other special needs should inform our training support staff prior to enrolling to discuss our support services available if required.

Dress code:
Participants are required to wear clean clothing appropriate for the workplace and enclosed shoes.

About this course

This course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to complete non-electrical work safely in the vicinity of a live electrical apparatus. ​ It includes compliance with safe approach distances for the worker, plant, tools and equipment.

  • Preparing to work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus
  • Identify hazards
  • Safe Approach Distances (SAD)
  • Permit to Work System
  • Safety Observers/Spotters
  • PPE
  • Electrical safety regulations
  • Complete work and documentation

Assessment

This course includes the following competency-based assessments: 

  • A Theory Assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions
  • Practical Assessment working as a Safety Observer in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus on two occasions
    • Completing two JSAs and Permits
    • Dealing with an unplanned event on one occasion
