Recertification:
Each work site will have its own refresher period requirements. Please check with the work site where you will be working. Generally, industry specific requirements for recertification range from every 12 months to every 3 years.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Due to the specific nature and purpose of this course, Recognition of Prior Learning is not available. Offering RPL would introduce unnecessary administrative complexity which can extend your assessment process and time to be longer than the course duration. To maintain uniform standards and ensure competency in critical safety skills, all Learners are required to complete the full training and assessment. Please contact us for further information.

Who This Course Is For

This training course is suitable for anyone working in an operational role that requires them to perform work at heights.

Pre-Requisites:

There are no prerequisite units for this course.

LLN Requirements:

Participants should have language, literacy and numeracy skills at the level required to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documentation relevant to working at heights. This includes entry permits, equipment checklists and risk assessments. If you have language, literacy or numeracy difficulty or other special needs, please inform our training support staff prior to enrolling so they can speak with you about our available support services.

Physical Requirements:

Participants must have the physical capacity to successfully complete practical tasks ranging from donning a fall arrest harness to climbing ladder systems. Learners must be free from injury and confident to participate in the practical component of training.

Dress code:

Participants are required to wear clean clothing appropriate for the workplace, and enclosed shoes.

About this course

This course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights in the resources and infrastructure industries. You will learn how to use safe work practices to effectively eliminate or control the risks associated with workplace falls and comply with Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements.


Course Content:

  • Legislation
  • Policies and procedures
  • Safety systems and equipment
  • Fall prevention measures and devices
  • Fall arrest systems
  • Ladder risk controls
  • Correct use of ladders
  • Equipment selection, inspection and maintenance
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and controls
  • Handling and securing equipment and materials
  • Emergency procedures
  • Correct fitting of full body harnesses

Assessment:

This course includes the following competency-based assessments: 

  • A Theory Assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions
  • Practical Assessment, with tasks including:
    • Pre-Start equipment inspections
    • Completing personal risk assessment documentation such as Take 5's and JSA's
    • Correctly donning PPE, including a fall arrest harness
    • Setting up and using fall-prevention and arrest systems
    • Climbing ladder systems on at least two (2) occasions
