- Activity calculations using Activity Formula or Time-line Method
Types & Industrial Uses of Radiation:
- Describe: Ionising radiation, Electromagnetic radiation, Alpha, Beta, Gamma & Neutron radiation emitted from Radioactive sources
- Shielding requirements for adequately blocking various types of Radiation Industrial Applications of various types of Ionising radiation
Radiation Dose & Dose Rates:
- Define: Absorbed Dose, Equivalent Dose & Radiation Weighting Factor
- Describe: Practical Units of Radiation Dose: Gray, Sievert, Rad & Rem
Principles of Radiation Protection:
- Describe: Various methods of radiation dose minimisation such as TIME, DISTANCE & SHIELDING
- Inverse Square Law, Transmission Factor, Transmission Chart & Specific Gamma Ray Factor
Biological Effects of Radiation:
- Explain with examples, various types of radiation injuries such as Somatic, Deterministic, Stochastic & Genetic Effects
- ALARA Principle, Lethal Doses (LD50 & LD100)
Radiation in Perspective:
- Describe various Natural Background Radiation sources around us, Artificial Radiation sources, Annual Background radiation dose received in Western Australia, Recommended Effective Whole-body Dose Limits (the ICRP Guidelines)
Detection & Measurement of Radiation:
- Describe various types of radiation detectors available for detection of Ionising radiation such as Ion Chamber, GM-Detector & Scintillation Detector
- Advantages and Disadvantages of various types of radiation detectors. Calibration of Radiation Detectors
- Personal Dosimeters such as Film badge, TLD and Canary
Radiation Safety Legislation:
- Understand various Regulations & regulatory guidelines (eg, Applicable Code of Practice) stipulated to regulate use, storage and transport of Radioactive material in Western Australia
- Effective Whole-body Dose Limits stipulated by Regulatory Guidelines in WA
Transport Regulations:
- Understand Transportation of Radioactive Materials in Western Australia in compliance with the Regulatory guidelines (Transport Code of Practice). Requirements for storage of Radioactive Material
- Describe various types of Transport Packages, Category Labels, Transport Index, Shippers Declaration Form and various requirements for transportation of Gamma Irradiator by a licenced person and Commercial Carrier
Gamma Irradiator (Self Contained):
- Gamma Irradiator (Gamma Cell) – Introduction, Gamma Irradiator – MSD Nordion, Permissible radiation levels, Caution sign, Operation, User/Operator, Radioactive source, Personal radiation monitoring, Wipe Test procedure
About this course
The three and a half days Gamma Irradiator (Self Contained) course is designed to equip the lto effectively manage all aspects as required for the safe use Gamma Irradiator (Self Contained) sources.
Candidates are required to undertake qualifying examinations at the end of the course. After passing the examination, candidates will be able to apply for Gamma Irradiator (Self Contained) license from the Radiological Council of WA.
