Radiation Dose & Dose Rates
- Define: Absorbed Dose, Equivalent Dose & Radiation Weighting Factor
- Describe: Practical Units of Radiation Dose: Gray, Sievert, Rad & Rem
Principles of Radiation Protection
- Describe: Various methods of radiation dose minimisation such as TIME, DISTANCE & SHIELDING

- Describe various Natural Background Radiation sources around us, Artificial Radiation sources, Annual Background radiation dose received in Western Australia, Recommended Effective Whole-body Dose Limits (ICRP Guidelines)
Detection & Measurement of Radiation
- Describe various types of radiation detectors available for detection of Ionising radiation such as Ion Chamber, GM-Detector & Scintillation Detector
- Advantages and Disadvantages of various types of radiation detectors. Calibration of Radiation Detectors
- Personal Dosimeters such as Film badge, TLD and Canary
Radiation Safety Legislation
- Understand various Regulations & regulatory guidelines (eg, Code of Practice) stipulated to regulate use, storage and transport of Radioactive material in Western Australia
- Site registration and personal licensing requirements and conditions, RSO responsibilities
- Effective Whole-body Dose Limits stipulated by Regulatory Guidelines in WA
Transport Regulations
- Understand Transportation of Radioactive Materials in Western Australia in compliance with the Regulatory guidelines (Transport Code of Practice). Requirements for storage of Radioactive Material
- Describe various types of Transport Packages, Category Labels, Transport Index, Shippers Declaration Form and various requirements for transportation of Radiation Gauges by a licenced person and Commercial Courier
Fixed Radiation Gauges
- Define and describe various types of Fixed Radiation Gauges such as Level Gauge, Density Gauge, In-Stream Analyzer & Multi-Stream Analyzer
- Gauge Maintenance – Radiation monitoring, Shutter test, Identification Labels and Area Caution Signs, Isolation of Level & Density Gauges Installation & Removal of Fixed Gauges

Who This Course Is For
Fixed Gauges course is suitable for any persons that work with Density Gauges and who have been nominated to take on the Role of Radiation Safety Officer for their site.
About this course
This three and a half day Fixed Gauges course otherwise known as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) course is designed to equip the candidate to effectively manage all aspects as required for the safe use fixed radiation sources.
Upon successful completion of the course exam, learners will be able to:
- Apply for Western Australian License for Fixed Gauges from the WA Radiological Council which is a pre-requisite for the appointment of site Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
- Supervise any unlicensed technical personnel, employee or contractor working in the vicinity of a Fixed Radiation Gauge
- Supervise any unlicensed technical personnel or workers involved in installation, removal of a Fixed Radiation Gauge
- Comply with the Statutory Requirements with regards to use, storage and transportation Fixed Gauges in Western Australia
- Carry out Fixed Gauges inspection, maintenance, collection of wipe test samples and test radiation level around or in the vicinity of Fixed Gauges
- Able to work confidently and competently in the vicinity of a Fixed Radiation Gauge
- Able to calibrate or isolate Fixed Gauges
- Prepare Work Instructions/Radiation Management Plan and Emergency Procedure
- Maintain site radiation store in compliance with the Regulatory Guidelines
