Fire Extinguisher and Emergency Warden Training Course
This course involves the skills and knowledge required to confine small emergencies in a facility as well as working within the command, control and coordination structure of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO).

What you'll learn
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for:
- PUAFER005 – Operate as part of an emergency control organisation
- PUAFER008 – Confine small emergencies in a facility
Nationally recognised training delivered by SGS Australia Pty Ltd (RTO# 2646)
Recertification:
Each work site will have its own refresher period requirements. Please check with the work site where you will be working. AS 3745 – 2010 requires that all ECO members, including nominated deputies, shall attend a skills retention activity at intervals not greater than six months.
Recognition of Prior Learning:
Due to the duration and purpose of this course, Recognition of Prior Learning is not available. Offering RPL would introduce a financial disadvantage and unnecessary administrative complexity which can extend your assessment process and time to be longer than the course duration. To maintain uniform standards and ensure competency in critical safety skills, all Learners are required to complete the full training and assessment. Please contact us for further information.
Who This Course Is For
This training course is suitable for anyone required to have first attack firefighting skills and those who are required to be members of an ECO who are floor or area wardens and/or wardens or deputy wardens.
Pre-Requisites:
There are no prerequisite units for this course.
LLN Requirements:
Participants should have language, literacy and numeracy skills at the level required to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documentation relevant to confine small emergencies in a facility and operate as part of an emergency control organisation . This includes communicating with occupants, emergency personnel and stakeholders, complying with facility policies and procedures, giving and following instructions, implementing facility emergency response procedures, reporting facility emergency response and utilising risk management processes.

Physical Requirements:
Participants must have the physical capacity to perform practical tasks including using and restowing initial response equipment.
Dress code:
Participants are required to wear clean clothing appropriate for the workplace, and enclosed shoes.
About this course
This course involves the skills and knowledge required to confine small emergencies in a facility as well as working within the command, control and coordination structure of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO).
Small emergencies in a facility include incidents such as small fires that can be controlled using a fire extinguisher; chemical spills that can be controlled using facility personal protective clothing and equipment and a spill kit; or a vehicle accident where there is no significant injury or damage. An ECO's priority is the safety of facility occupants and visitors during an emergency which means ECO members are responsible for pre-emergency, emergency and post emergency actions
This course has been developed to cover the facilities as specified in Australian Standard AS3745 and AS4083. For this course, as covered by AS3745 and/or AS4083, occupants are people attending a facility on a permanent or temporary basis such as an employee, contractor, student or resident, but not a visitor or patient and a facility is a building, structure or workplace that is, or may be, occupied by people (occupants).
All aspects of this course must be undertaken in line with legislative requirements, organisational policies and procedures, and accepted safe work practices.
Course Content:
- Undertaking pre-emergency planning
- Preparing for emergency situations
- Identifying and assessing an emergency
- Taking appropriate actions in an emergency
- Safely confining emergencies
- Using initial response equipment
- Assisting with post emergency activities
- Reporting on the facility's emergency response.
Assessment:
- Theory Assessments with multiple choice and short answer questions
- Practical Assessments, with tasks including:
- A prestart inspection on a fire extinguisher
- Correct use of portable fire extinguishers
- Correct use of a fire blanket
- Undertake pre-emergency planning
- Take appropriate actions in an emergency
- Assist with post emergency activities
