Course Overview

What you'll learn

Upon successful completion of the course requirements,  a Statement of Attainment will be issued for:

  • RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces
  • RIIRIS201E – Conduct local risk control
  • MSMPER200 – Work in accordance with an issued permit
  • MSMPER202 – Observe permit work
  • MSMWHS201 – Conduct hazard analysis
  • MSMPER300 – Issue work permits
  • MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres
  • MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus
  • PUASAR025 – Undertake confined space rescue

Nationally recognised training delivered by SGS Australia Pty Ltd (RTO# 2646)

Recertification:
Each work site will have its own refresher period requirements. Please check with the work site where you will be working. Generally, industry specific requirements for recertification range from every 2 to 3 years.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

Due to the specific nature and purpose of this course, Recognition of Prior Learning is not available. Offering RPL would introduce unnecessary administrative complexity which can extend your assessment process and time to be longer than the course duration. To maintain uniform standards and ensure competency in critical safety skills, all Participants are required to complete the full training and assessment. Please contact us for further information.

Who This Course Is For

This course is suitable for anyone who holds current advanced confined spaces competencies and requires refresher training due to industry specific requirements.

Pre-Requisites:

Participants must have successfully completed and hold a current Statement of Attainment for the required units of competency or their equivalents issued within the last 3 years. This evidence must be provided when making a booking request.

Please note: Evidence of pre-requisite must be emailed through to au.sgsacademy@sgs.com for verification. If Pre-requisite requirements cannot be supplied, please book into the Enter and Work in Confined Spaces 3-day course.

LLN Requirements:
Language, literacy and numeracy skills are required at a level to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documentation relevant to working in confined spaces. This includes entry permits, equipment checklists and risk assessments.
Participants with a language, literacy and/or numeracy difficulty or other special needs should inform our training support staff prior to enrolling to discuss our support services if required.

Physical Requirements:
Participants must have the physical ability to successfully complete practical tasks ranging from donning a confined spaces harness and breathing apparatus, to climbing in and out of simulated confined spaces and performing rescue tasks. Participants must be free from injury and confident to participate in the practical component of training.

Dress code:
Participants are required to wear clean clothing appropriate for the workplace, and enclosed shoes.

About this course

This course is designed to provide participants with refreshed and updated skills and knowledge required for entering and working in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries.   • Legislation, standards, codes of practice and procedures
  • Assessing, entering, working and exiting confined spaces
  • Standby duties
  • Signage
  • Lock, tag out and isolation procedures
  • Purging and ventilation
  • Issuing and working in accordance with a permit
  • Equipment used in or near confined spaces
  • Hazard analysis, risk assessment and risk controls
  • Procedures for atmospheric monitoring
  • Understanding and use of gas monitoring equipment
  • Maintenance of gas monitoring equipment
  • Use of ropes and knots
  • Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory devices
  • Responding to an emergency situation

Assessment:

  • A Theory Assessment with multiple choice and short answer questions
  • Practical Assessments, with tasks including:
    • Pre-Start equipment inspections
    • Completing personal risk assessment documentation such as Take 5's and JSA's
    • Taking part in two (2) simulated confined space entries under supervision and instruction
    • Issuing and observing work permits as part of the above Confined space entries
    • Using breathing apparatus to meet operational requirements
    • Rescuing a person from a confined space
