What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • With reference to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, explain the process-based Quality Management System (QMS) model for ISO 9001:2026, and the role of internal audit in the maintenance and improvement of a QMS.
  • Explain the role and responsibilities of an Auditor to plan conduct, report and follow up an internal QMS audit, in accordance with ISO 19011:2026 and ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 where appropriate.
  • Plan, conduct, report and follow up an internal audit of part of an QMS based on ISO 9001:2026, and in accordance with ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 where appropriate.

Learners will need to demonstrate acceptable performance in these areas to complete the course successfully.

About this course

The objective of this course is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to perform an internal audit of part of a QMS based on ISO 9001:2026 (or equivalent), report on the effective implementation and maintenance of the management system in accordance with ISO 19011:2026 and to contribute to the continual improvement of the management system.

The course refers to ISO 9001:2026 as the management system standard that provides the context for an internal audit. However, this course does not address ISO 9001:2026 in detail.

Learners who successfully complete this ISO 9001:2026 (QMS) Internal Auditor Training course (within the five years before making an application to become a certificated auditor) will satisfy part of the training requirements for initial certification as a certified IRCA QMS Internal Auditor. For full training and requirements, please refer to quality.org/IRCA-grades

Recommended Prior Knowledge

  1. Management systems
    • The Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) cycle
    • The core elements of a management system and the interrelationship between top management responsibility, policy, objectives, planning, implementation, performance evaluation and continual improvement
  2. Quality management
    • The fundamental concepts and the seven quality management principles (see ISO 9000)
    • The relationship between quality management and customer satisfaction.
  3. ISO 9001
    • An understanding of the requirements of ISO 9001 and commonly used quality management terms and definitions, which may be gained by completing a CQI and ICA Certified ISO 9001:2026 Foundation (QMS)(FD136) training course or equivalent.
